My current intership allows me to do a whole bunch of things and I couldn’t be happier to be able to use clothes, accessories and small studio equipment to set up my own shootings, try out new things, excercise in setting up sceneries and play with patterns, colours and lightning. Knowing that I finish school soon and will have time to get truly creative and better at what I am doing and follow my interest for more fashion oriented shootings. This is my first big shooting I did for them, with the scarves of their Spring/Summer collection 2014 and I am pleasently suprised about how happy I am with the results. There is much room to improve, in a very very good way. Check out more here.
Of the moment: White
I don’t even wear white, except a white shirt from time to time. But I have come to appreciate the accent of a white accessory, my agenda from Leuchtturm, my COS purse and my necklace I made last week-end. And since I usually have a quite dark wardrobe, black, gray, blue and I like the twist. Different materials like porcellaine, ceramics, leather, paper give white a nice feel and a deeper dimension.
Agenda: Leuchtturm; Purse: COS; Necklace: DIY; Candlehouse: &Klevering; Deer: Strauss
On the importance of treating yourself
My nature is energetic, dynamic, I can deal with a lot of things at the same time and I need a larger workload to function properly. But from time to time I tend to forget that I am not a machine, even if my friend Frida still calls me one to this day.
Two studies at the same time, work, internships, a social life, I enjoy it, I enjoy it immensely and I don’t want to complain. I just have to tell myself to slow down a bit, have priorities and they should be my physical and mental health. I have gotten much better at it already though, there was a time when I couldn’t admit to myself that I was trapped doing the wrong studies, having the wrong priorities and not listening to what I really wanted to do. But don’t we all feel like that at some point? For me that was at the beginning of my twenties, when I started to study politics, which I thought was my dream for many years. Turned out it was, it was but a dream I subscribed to at a young age and never let go, never asked myself if that was the real thing, if there wasn’t something else for me and at the same time nobody ever asked me neither. But starting a discussion about the German or European schoolsystem is another subject and I may talk about that another time. What I really want to point out is: Listen to your own rythm and what you want, only you are the judge of what makes you truly happy and no feeling of obligation towards parents, teachers or other institutions is worth a burn-out syndrom at the brink of your thirties. I have learned and still have to learn how to do it better, to treat myself from time to time. To switch off work, school and else for the time of a week-end, watch a couple of movies I have been wanting to watch for a longer time, have expensive chocolate, bake a cake, do some DIY and just lounge at home.
I love what I do and there is no real line between my work and private life, it is up to me to draw one and to know when I have to take a step back and it is extremely difficult for someone like me, but I know that I have to learn it. Not only once in a while, but continously. For my own well-being and that of the people around me. And not just me, I think that there will be a lot of people able to connect to this feeling of not knowing where to draw the line anymore. And this is why it becomes that much more important to allow ourselves a moment of breathing in fresh air and make time for a reward. And that is what I did last week-end, after a month-and-a-half of internship-school-study-exams I definately earned myself a time-out. I made a cake, a necklace I will show you later, had gold-sprakling pralinés that my mom gave me and a lovely brunch watching Bill Cunninghams New York. Perfect.
Yet another beautifully insnyc video, the narration of the song is owned by the dancers, the perfect colors and the journey they take you on. Oh and the song is very nice as well.
I try to make the first of december an annual appointment for me, Paris and my very dear friend Lea that celebrates a new year then. This is the second consecutive year that I went for her birthday and I can honestly count this one in my top five of birthday parties. She tries to make her birthday an occasion to get together long lost friends and have them meet strangers that become friends. This one was especially nice, since it did not take place the night, but on a sleepy sunday in Paris in an appartment that breathes talent and creativity. At Petit Commité, Lulu and her mother have created a very special and beautiful place that smells and feels amazing. It is heartwarming and welcoming, with hand-picked furniture and decoration and the food, well, the food swept me off my feet. Croissants filled with raw salmon and guacamole, warm goat-cheese, peas and mint paste tartelettes, white truffle pastry, fresh salads with smoked haddock, fennel and apple…you get the taste. Btw Lulu also illustrates recipes for the Kenzo blog and her boyfriends works with my friend Lea for Freunde von Freunden. And Lea is just good at everything she does.
I just discovered this Aiofe McArdle through the Dazed digital top ten music videos of 2013 guide and I am blown away. I am a big fan of music videos and I can get excited about videographers trying out different styles, trying to make a piece that will last, try to reach a cinematographic standart. Nowadays there are many artists being involved in the creative process and working directly with the director, if not directing the video themselves. I can honestly admit that I have a big thing for Lana del Rey and I admire her artistic vision and her creation of the persona Lana del Rey. But this video by Aiofe McArdle has left me speechless. I watch it over and over again, trying to capture the colours, the movements and the story. It is the perfect visualization of “the journey is the goal”. I cannot rave more about this filmmaker, go ahead and discover more of his works, they are just as good.
A couple of months ago Kiehl’s opened up a shop in Brussels. I always admired their packaging that appeals to women and men at the same time, not going for either a more feminine or masculine side. Sophisticated with a vintage typo yet modern. Packaging and shops are inspired by old pharmacies translated into a contemporary concept. Until now I had never used Kiehls products but I needed a new cleanser so I though it’d be a good opportunity to try it out for the first time. The service was great, with the salesman knowing exactly what questions to ask, he gave me two choices and I decided to go for the washable cleansing milk. It has a great texture, leaves the skin super smooth and has a discret but pleasant smell. I am more than happy to go into a shop and get a good feeling about the staff that are competent and can guide in your choice but that will also leave you to discover the products on your own if you rather do that. The plus was that he gave me product samples of the same line to try out the complete routine at home. Personally I find client psychology and selling strategies incredibly interesting, so when I come to a shop and experience some of the things I read about myself it intrigues me and that for me is when i say I might be coming back.
2013 Belgium x Opening Ceremony
This year Belgium is the chosen one to collaborate with Opening Ceremony and I was pleasantly suprised when I browsed through their blog and stumbled upon my friend Elias on a series of pictures that showcase the graduate collection of Devon Halfnight LeFlufy at the Royal Academy Antwerp.
I admit that I rediscover his collection for the first time again since I could not make it to this year’s show of the Royal Academy Antwerp due to a huge workload. Me myself I had to prepare my exams. I watched a livestream of the show but that just isn’t the same. Although there is a collection I know very well but I will talk about that later.
Devon Halfnight LeFlufy is now available on Opening Ceremony and if you want to know more about this years collaboration it is right here.
